Safety Tips for Trick-or-Treaters
Kids under 12 should:
- Always go trick-or-treating with a responsible adult
- Know how to call 911 in case of emergency
- Know their parent or caregivers phone number in case they get separated or lost
Older children:
- Help them plan and review an acceptable route
- Carry a cellphone for communication
- Go with a group, and stay together
- Stay in well-lit areas, and only go to houses with porch lights on
All children:
- Walk on sidewalks on lit streets
- Cross streets at crosswalks and never assume cars will stop
- Carry a flashlight with fresh batteries or glowsticks so they can see and be seen
- Teach your children to never enter a stranger’s home or car
- Everyone needs to remember to put their devices down, keep their heads up, and remain aware of their surroundings
Safety Tips for Drivers
- Watch for children walking on roadways, medians, and curbs
- If out after sunset, don’t forget to look for children in dark clothing and costumes
- Double-check for pedestrians and bicyclists when entering and exiting driveways and alleys
- If you have new, inexperienced drivers in your household, you may want to discourage them from driving on Halloween
- If you are attending a party, make a plan for how you will get home safely. NEVER drink and drive!
