Summer has arrived, and with it so have the summer temperatures. The National Weather Service, Jacksonville has forecast heat index values in the triple digits this week.
With the temperatures soaring, it is important to take precautions to prevent heat-related illness.
Stay Cool:
- Try to avoid being outdoors during the hottest part of the day, usually between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. If you need to be outside, find shade whenever possible, and take frequent breaks in cooler areas.
- Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, and light-colored clothing that allows your skin to breathe. Opt for breathable fabrics such as cotton to help evaporate sweat and keep your body cool.
- Spend time in air-conditioned environments, such as malls, libraries, or community centers, to escape the heat.
- Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles, as it can have severe and potentially fatal consequences.
Stay Hydrated:
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Dehydration can sneak up on you quickly, especially when it’s hot outside.
- Avoid excessive alcohol and caffeinated beverages, as they can dehydrate you further.
- Don't forget to remind those around you to stay hydrated as well.
Stay Informed:
- Keep an eye on weather updates and heat advisories. This knowledge will help you plan your activities, avoid extreme heat, and take necessary precautions.
Remember: heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion or heatstroke can be serious. If you or someone around you experiences symptoms such as dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, or confusion, seek medical help immediately and move to a cooler environment.
