Weather Update

September 06, 2024
The City of Jacksonville’s Emergency Preparedness Division is closely monitoring the current weather patterns and is in regular contact with the National Weather Service to ensure we have the latest information on potential local impacts.
The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Watch for our area, effective through tomorrow morning. There is a slight risk of excessive rain today, particularly west of the St. Johns River. Residents can expect between 0.5” to 1” of rainfall from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

As we move into the weekend, there is a 20-30% chance of receiving 2” to 3” of rain through Sunday, with a small chance (less than 5%) of isolated areas in Duval County receiving up to 5”. On Monday, another round of storms is expected as a Nor’easter approaches, which could bring additional flooding early next week.

We urge everyone to stay weather-aware as this impacts our area. Here are some important safety tips to keep you prepared and JaxReady:
  • Sign up for weather alerts: Ensure you have a way to receive severe weather notifications. Visit JaxReady.com/ALERTJAX to sign up for ALERTJAX messages.
  • Avoid floodwaters: Never attempt to walk, swim, or drive through flooded areas. Just six inches of moving water can knock you down.
  • Turn Around, Don’t Drown: It’s difficult to gauge the depth of water on flooded roads. Just 12 inches of water can sweep a vehicle away.
  • Find alternate routes: If you encounter barricades, debris, or standing water, seek another way to your destination.
  • Drive carefully: Slow down, as wet roads increase stopping distances.
  • Use headlights: Ensure your headlights are on to improve visibility for both you and other drivers on the road.

Additionally, the Emergency Preparedness Division wants to remind residents that the ground is already saturated from recent rainfall. This increases the risk of flooding, so please take these precautions seriously. Driving through floodwaters—whether in a business or residential area—creates a "wake," which can cause additional costly damage to nearby businesses and homes.
Stay safe, stay prepared, and JaxReady!
