The National Weather Service, Jacksonville, has forecast dangerous temperatures this week, with heat indices, or “feels like” temperatures, potentially climbing to 117°. This extreme heat can pose severe health risks, especially for vulnerable populations. The elderly, young children, pregnant women, and individuals with pre-existing health conditions are particularly susceptible to heat-related illnesses.
To safeguard against threats from extreme heat, the Emergency Preparedness Division urges you to stay JaxReady and take the following safety measures.
Stay Cool:
- Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing to keep cool.
- Limit outdoor activities during peak hours when the sun is at its strongest.
- If you have to be outside, take frequent breaks in shaded areas.
- Never leave kids or pets alone in a vehicle, even for a short time. Cars can become dangerously hot.
Stay Hydrated:
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day to stay well-hydrated.
- Avoid alcohol and sugary drinks.
- Remember to keep your pets hydrated too.
Stay Informed:
- Monitor trusted sources for the latest weather updates.
- Know the signs of heat-related illness, such as dizziness, nausea, and rapid heartbeat- if you or someone you are near experience any of these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention.
The Emergency Preparedness Division is closely monitoring the situation and providing regular updates on weather conditions. We advise the Duval County community to follow these safety recommendations and stay informed about additional advisories or alerts. This week’s extreme temperatures call for extra caution and vigilance. We advise you to take these safety recommendations seriously.
